The Outland Living portable fire pits include bags of grey-coloured natural lava rocks for your convenience. Under normal operating conditions, these rocks will turn brown as they continue to bake.
In addition to the change in colour, it is normal for black soot to form on some of the rocks shortly after operation. Soot is a natural by-product of the rich air/fuel mixture required to create Outland Living's signature decorative orange-yellow flame.
NOTE: While we cannot eliminate the production of soot from occurring, there are circumstances that can cause it to worsen. Using the fire pit at higher altitudes where the air is thinner may contribute to the production of soot. Oxygen becomes less dense at higher elevations, which in turn, causes the fire pit's already-rich combustion to burn richer. More often than not, we find excessive soot production to be the result of an obstruction within the burner tube. In most cases, the fire pit just needs a good cleaning, and we can help guide you through the easy cleaning process! Please send our Customer Support team an image of your rocks at info@outlandliving if you are concerned about the amount of soot your fire pit is producing.
